Androgynous Leadership is the Future
The need to increase the amount of female senior executives into leading corporations is a necessity however there is another management style that is often overlooked that should be encouraged to ultimately generate success for business, the androgynous leadership style.
Traditionally leadership is often associated with strong masculine traits: decisive, aggressive, powerful, dominant, risk taking which are all descriptions associated with top managers. They are seen as kings of the corporate jungle but is this the best way to maximize all elements for effective corporations for the future?
The recognition of the value of female traits of warmth, sensitivity to others, listening and concern for others's well-being and development have gained increased importance in modern management. This is often Pigeon holed as into being relevant to certain specific sectors.
There is a growing recognition that the optimum style for the best management is a combination of all these traits. The evolving business culture of today means that the need to create the androgynous leader has never been more relevant.
It goes beyond gender. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion has to become part of a company's DNA, fully embraced by all levels of an organization and requiring a holistic approach.
Androgyny: An Emerging Trend In Leadership
There is growing evidence of the benefits of combining male and female traits. Research has shown the androgynous leader is bold and willing to take risks but is also cordial, understanding and supportive. The manager that combines soft and hard skills helps increase employee satisfaction, their work performance and functioning more effectively.
The androgynous leader is assertive and powerful, has a strong personality, and dares to take a stand. Research concludes this style benefits business with increased loyalty, productivity and inclusion.
The rise of androgynous leadership is not about right or wrong, or best and better. It is about improving business communication and ultimately staff productivity, leading companies through thick & thin.
The need to balance the qualities of different management styles will help companies evolve to the future corporate environment. The business world is ever changing. In order to succeed, the organization needs also to adapt from the top. The balancing act is to keep women on their career track, being supported by men, which in turn helps men to develop skills and traits attributed to female management style. Creating a positive work environment where men and women are comfortable to connect and focus on the business ahead is instrumental for the well-being of their company and staff. Satisfied staff deliver positive corporate results.
Changing the stereotypical view and introducing effective practises
The challenge and difficulty is to change the traditional perceptions of effective leaders. Many at the top are in position of control and influence. As is often the case with change, there is conflict and suspicion of new methods and ideas.
In all businesses it is the leadership that sets the example and defines its respective corporate culture.
In the modern business world, cultural diversity, gender inclusion, and diverse perspectives are regarded as value adding. However, if they are conform only to a single leadership style that is not balanced, then this combination of skills and talents are lost.
